“I hate housework! You make the beds, do the dishes and six months later you have to start all over again.” – Joan Rivers
Yes, cleaning can be the burden of all burdens. But living in an unorganized and chaotic mess can really pile on the stress. Here’s my 3 secrets to streamlining my household cleaning:
- Organize. This may seem simple, but in order to have a truly clean and functional house, you need to organize everything. Everything has a spot! I find myself going to Dollar Tree on the reg to pick up baskets or containers to organize my house. That way when I need something, I don’t have to go hunting. Check out this blog on how to utilize the Dollar Tree to organize your house.
- Pick up your house once a day for 15 minutes. This is the best advice my aunt has ever given me: pick up your house every night or if you’re an early bird, every morning. Spend only 15 minutes walking around the house and putting stuff where it belongs. Imagine if you had every person in the house doing this. If you let your house get anything like mine was in the past, then it takes hours and hours to just to pick everything up and put it back in its place. Before you know it, you’ve spent your entire Saturday picking up odds and ends when you could have spent the day doing something more fun like going for a bike ride or shopping.
- Create a cleaning schedule. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. She’s that type of person aka controlling. But, in all actuality, I’m really not. I’ve just learned over time that having to deep clean the house the day of company coming over (or 30 minutes before they arrive — EEK!) is a PAIN IN THE ASS. If I can tackle one deep cleaning task a day, then it makes my life so much easier. Here’s my cleaning schedule below:
Monday: Grocery Shopping & Meal Prep
Tuesday: Bathrooms & Kitchen
Wednesday: Dusting & Polishing
Thursday: Sweeping, Mopping & Vacuuming
Saturday: Lawn Work
It never takes more than 30 minutes to get these done, but then again I live in a two bed, one bath apartment. However, if you have kids, then you have little minions. Or as my dad liked to say “why do you think I had kids?” Assign a chore to everyone in the house and there you have it! But, make sure to do it on a consistent basis or it will take forever to do the cleaning.
